The Cape County Commissioners last Thursday approved a self-funded health insurance plan after reviewing market options. Employees were facing a 9 percent increase in cost in 2013, but by using not using an insurance company to provide benefits and having employees shop for the best prices on medical services they were able to save nearly 40-thousand dollars. Had they renewed with their current policy holder, Coventry Health Care, it would have cost nearly 1 point 4 million dollars. Under the new plan money saved goes back into the county accounts.
