The historic statue of St. Francis of Assisi has been moved and ground broken for the latest project by Saint Francis Medical Center. The two phase “Building on Excellence” project is slated for completion in the summer of 2016 and cost about 127-million dollars. It includes a five story patient tower, the transition to all private patient rooms, private NICU rooms and expansion of individual units. SFMC President Steven Bjelich tells KZIM-KSIM this is the hospitals most ambitious project. The statue was moved until the project’s completion. It was first placed in 1880 when the hospital was located at the corner of Sprigg and William Streets. It has been moved four times since the facility opened. St. Francis of Assisi is the patron saint and stands out front to greet guests as they enter.
