A New Madrid death ruled an accidental drowning

Dec 12, 2012 -- 2:00pm

A New Madrid man found dead Monday night in a drainage ditch will be laid to rest this week.  34-year old Irvin Matlock of Portageville was located in waist-high water by the Sheriff’s Department at around 7:15 PM.  The New Madrid County Coroner Jimmy McSpadden has ruled his death an accidental drowning.  Matlock and his partner went to camp at Blue Hole on the levee near Point Pleasant Sunday night.  When the thunderstorms began to hit, they attempted to walk home.  After a brief argument, the two parted ways.  The woman was picked up and taken home Sunday night.  Family members reported Matlock’s absence Monday morning.  Matlock was legally blind and police do not suspect foul play.  He was transported to his hometown of Savannah, Tennessee.  Matlock will be laid to rest after his funeral Thursday at 1 PM at Shackleford Funeral Home.
