The Statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run praises Southeast Missouri

Dec 19, 2012 -- 11:22am

The Statewide Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Missouri recently presented several local entities with an honor for their hard work this year.  The Run is an annual event, where city and county police carry the lit torch throughout the state to arrive at the Special Olympics state track and field games in Jefferson City.  The Region-9 winners included Cape police who raised 97-hundred-dollars last year, the highest gross increase in the area.  Sikeston DPS had a 62-percent increase in funds, the tops in the region.  They were also named the outstanding agency of the year in region-9.  Southeast Missouri district executive director Penny Williams tells KZIM KSIM the law enforcement in our area takes this program very seriously.  Williams says police are active at the Cape fall games, assisting the 11-hundred local athletes, and taking part in the opening ceremony.  Those games will take place again this October.  The local chapter’s next fundraiser is the Polar Bear Plunge with Cape Police in February at Lake Boutin.
