Cape Girardeau loses its oldest school building as crews began Friday with the demolition of the old Jefferson Elementary School. The two-story school brick and stone structure built in 1904 fell into disrepair, was gifted to the Prodigy Leadership Academy in 2011, and crews are working to take down the 108-year-old building according to the demolition permit issued Thursday. Russell Grammer, founder of Prodigy, a private school for children in kindergarten through high school tells KZIM-KSIM that the demolition team is working to salvage as much of the architectural value of the building as possible, with its history to be incorporated into a future structure for the school. He says that after much evaluation, they decided that the building would be too costly to restore. Three local companies are donating labor and equipment to complete the demolition that should be finished this week.
