Democrats who will select a candidate to run in a June special election to fill a vacancy left in Congress by former U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson are making changes to their plans for a nomination meeting—and their leadership. Committee member Mike Masterson of Cape Girardeau tells KZIM-KSIM that members of the 68-person committee will still meet Sunday in Poplar Bluff, but will not vote to select a candidate. Masterson says the candidate’s public forum is on hold, for now. But the committee will hold a closed forum with two candidates, state Rep. Linda Black of Bonne Terre and Todd Mahn of De Soto. Parma businessman and farmer Barry Aycock said Thursday that he will not seek the committee's nomination, despite his endorsement by Cape Girardeau County Democrats at a meeting Tuesday. They plan to nominate a candidate Feb. 9 during a meeting at a yet-to-be determined location. Masterson also says the committee will come under new leadership as its chair, Art Cole, resigned Thursday. Also on Feb. 9, Republicans will nominate a candidate at 10 a.m. at the River Centre in Van Buren and Libertarians plan to hold a public forum and nomination meeting at 1 p.m. at the Scott County Courthouse.
