Independent may enter 8th District race

Feb 12, 2013 -- 5:15pm

Democrats plan to nominate a candidate Saturday in Poplar Bluff for the June 4th special election for Missouri's 8th Congressional District.  Republicans and Libertarians chose their candidates this past weekend.   But an independent candidate could still be placed on the ballot if they gather just over 6,000 signatures from registered voters, a number equal to 2 percent of the total votes cast in the November 2012 congressional race.  They must also have the signatures certified with the secretary of state by March 30.  While Jo Ann Emerson ran as an independent when she was first elected in 1996, she later ran as a Republican, and there are no independents currently serving in the U.S. House of Representatives. There are two independent members of the U.S. Senate: Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, though both caucus with the Democrats.
