A Union County family suspected of operating a meth lab had a sweet surprise for drug agents and the Anna police—they were making maple syrup. Officers sped to the property Wednesday on a tip from neighbors that the Benson family was manufacturing illegal drugs, but the buckets and containers near the trees were quickly recognized for their true purpose. Resident Laura Benson was startled, but glad to know that neighbors were alert and watching out for crime in the area, and even inviting neighbors over for pancakes. The Benson's have been making their own maple syrup for the past five years, but this was their first drug raid. Agents reportedly left with samples of the syrup.
