Police are investigating a theft of several batteries from a Cape Girardeau church's bus fleet thought to have taken place sometime during the past week.
Police spokesman Darin Hickey said someone removed eight heavy duty vehicle batteries from four buses belonging to Cape First Church. The buses were parked behind the home of a man who works on the vehicles at 1148 S. Sprigg St.
Hickey said the batteries were in place the last time the mechanic checked, which was about a week before police received the report of the theft on Wednesday afternoon. He also said it was likely the batteries were taken to be stripped down and sold for scrap metal.
