High winds were responsible for thousands of Ameren Missouri customers in and around Cape Girardeau being in the dark Tuesday night.

Ameren Missouri spokesman Bryan Daniels said a feeder line at the Glenwood substation in northeast Cape Girardeau, off Route W, lost power because of the wind. Power was restored at about 1:25 a.m., he said.

At one point, the Ameren Missouri website listed more than 2,700 customers without power. among almost 17,500 in the 63701 ZIP code.

An Ameren map showed the outage stretched beyond Cape Girardeau's city limits to affect customers north, west and south of the city, as well as those on Cape Girardeau's north side.
