Mar 07, 2013 -- 4:58pm

The numbers are hard to believe… 2-hundred-ninety-three-thousand 6-hundred-twenty-three meals were served to kids last year during the summer months in our area. Spokesperson for the Summer Food Service Program with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Gena Terlizzi tells KZIM KSIM we had seventeen sponsors and 1-hundred-five sites making sure the individuals received at least one nutritious meal each day while not attending school…It's really isn't just kids 18 and under who qualify for this program it is also those are disabled physically or mentally and are in the education system. All who receive free or reduced lunches or are at 1-hundred-85 percent of the federal poverty rate are included. Childhood hunger is a real problem in Cape Girardeau, Dunklin, New Madrid, Stoddard, Mississippi, Scott, and Pemiscot Counties. Terlizzi says no matter what the reason for them not eating well we have to put their needs first. To become a sponsor all 888-435-1464. Or applications are available at the Missouri Department of Health’s website.
