17-year-old dies in crash on Route 34

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is reporting a death on Highway 34 Friday afternoon. The report says a 17-year-old girl died around 4pm between Jackson and Marble Hill when a delivery truck driven by 33-year old Bobby Abernathy of Jackson crossed the center line and hit an SUV driven by 18-year old Erin Cordell of Marble Hill. According to on line reports one vehicle was on fire with two people were trapped, and another confirmed dead.  Passenger in the delivery truck, 22-year old Eric Smith of Jackson, and Abernathy received moderate injuries and were taken to a local hospital. 17-year-old Amelia Fisher of Glen Allen was a passenger in the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene by Cape Girardeau County Coroner John Clifton. The highway patrol says Fisher and Cordell were NOT wearing seat belts. Cordell was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries. This is fatality number 9 for Troop E in 2013.
