Walmart makes another significant donation to fight hunger in Missouri

Jul 27, 2012 -- 6:05pm

Walmart has donated $125,000 to the Ozark’s Food Harvest – a southwest Missouri food bank.Missouri Food Bank Association State Director, Scott Baker says this follows a 50-thousand dollar gift to the Missouri Promoting Food Security Plan.  He tells KZIM KSIM these MAJOR gifts make a dent but it’s way bigger than that. It’s a serious, ongoing, and growing problem. It's going to take all hands on deck. Corporations, government, community - all of us have a role - it's that serious. Baker says people used to need assistance for a month or two. Now the hunger is matching the unemployment statistics and growing into an epidemic. 40-percent of those helped are the “working poor”. And many are children. Even if they have non-motivated parents - should not be eating processed foods or going hungry. Missouri’s six food banks gave out 95-million pounds of food last year alone! Baker thanks Walmart and says this is part of their commitment of 2-billion-dollars in cash and in-kind donations to fight hunger over 5 years.
