Police have formal charges now against a Sikeston man who ran down people at a party Sunday afternoon. One man was killed and five others were injured after being struck by a car. 25-year old Joseph Thornton is charged with first degree murder, armed criminal action, and five counts
of first degree assault. The incident happened outside a home at 612 S West Street in Sikeston. DPS Captain Jim McMillen says there was an altercation at a family gathering and the suspect was asked to leave. The homeowner said Thornton is his cousin and he was told to leave for being “obnoxious toward another guest." According to the probable cause statement, witnesses say Thornton got into a car and ‘floored it’, crashing into two cars and ten to twenty people! He then struck the house. Over a hundred people were in harm’s way. Three children were hit. Two are only three years old and the other is four years old. One child was listed in serious condition. Another two were listed in serious condition, and one other has moderate injuries. Law enforcement says Thornton appeared very intoxicated when he was put under arrest. His daughter was in the back seat of the car during the incident. Thornton has a history of DWI, resisting arrest, assault, domestic assault, and robbery.
