Locals who travel the Cairo bridge are asked to give input about its future

May 06, 2013 -- 7:30am

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced public meetings to discuss options for improving or replacing the U.S. 51 Ohio River Bridge – also known as the Cairo Bridge – between Wickliffe, KY and Cairo.   The public is invited to attend the meeting in our area that will be held Monday, the 20th from 4-7pm at Cairo High School.  The KYTC is in a long-term planning process to identify preferred alternatives for the next phase of project development and consider the Cairo Bridge an important transportation link for nearby communities in Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri, as well as for cross-country travel.  Possible options include:  rehabilitation of the existing bridge,  replacement of the bridge in its current location,  construction of a new bridge in a new location, or no action at all.  The bridge carries about 5,400 vehicles per day across the Ohio River.
