An Iron County babysitter takes a plea for child abuse and manslaughter, results in probation

May 07, 2013 -- 6:00pm

An Iron County babysitter accused of causing the death of a child in her care has received a suspended sentence.  56-year-old Martha Farris of Pilot Knob was set to go to trial in February on one count of child abuse resulting in death and involuntary manslaughter. Farris entered an Alford plea with Judge Kelly Parker in Iron County Circuit Court, allowing her to admit that sufficient evidence exists for the prosecution to convince a judge or jury to find her guilty, without technically admitting guilt.  Farris was babysitting 3-month-old William Pratt February 2nd, 2009.  An autopsy showed the child died as a result of a closed head injury due to non-accidental head trauma.  Farris was in court Friday and received a suspended sentence of 7 years, and will serve 5 years of probation.
