A southwestern Illinois police chief is free on bond after being accused of felony misconduct charges that include misusing a pickup truck seized in a drug case.
Fifty-six-year-old Caseyville Police Chief J.D. Roth was charged Wednesday in St. Clair County. Roth has been on paid leave since the investigation was made public in March.
The Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/12hfOxS) reports the village board told Roth to sell the truck at auction, but instead he drove the 2003 Dodge pickup. The village later sold the truck to a dealership owned by one of Roth's friends. Roth then purchased the truck.
State law bars public officials or employees from buying or benefiting from seized property.
Roth's attorney says Roth is confident he'll prove his innocence.
