The Cape Girardeau-Jackson area came in 5th in a list of the top 8 least expensive cities to live. The website looked at a number of factors including the unemployment rate in the Cape-Jackson area at 5.9 percent compared to a national rate of 7.1 percent. Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Vice President Tim Arbeiter tells KZIM/KSIM the economy helps with the appeal. The average prices in the area are about 20 percent below national price averages, and the overall cost of living in Cape and Jackson is 92 percent of the national cost of living, while the median home cost is about 80 percent of national prices and local property tax is well below the national average. The list also includes Jonesboro, Arkansas and Jefferson City, Missouri.
