The unemployment rate fell to 9.1 percent in May and Illinois businesses according to preliminary data released today by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES). Spokesman for the Department Greg Rivara tells KZIM KSIM consumer confidence is important to keep this trend going. He says that the increase in jobs has reached both urban and rural areas in the Illinois. Private sector job growth shows Illinois businesses are warming to the idea of adding new positions. The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and seeking employment. Unemployment rates fell in 8 of 21 Southern Illinois Counties compared to May of last year including Alexander, Randolph, Jackson, and Massac counties.
