Poplar Bluff man starts criminal trial today for allegedly assaulting his parents

A Poplar Bluff man who has pled not guilty in the death of his father and severe injury of his mother for allegedly striking them with a baseball bat will begin his criminal trial tomorrow. 27-year-old Matthew D Jenkins appeared in Butler county court in May. After witness testimony in February, a trial was ordered on felony first-degree assault, felony second-degree murder, and two felony counts of armed criminal action. Jenkins allegedly beat his parents in January at their Poplar Bluff home and told police he was gone during the arrack, but later admitted to the beating. Jenkins’s case was transferred to the New Madrid County Circuit Clerk. He will appear before Judge Fred Copeland
