A recent death on a roller coaster at Six Flags Over Texas in Arlington and the closure of another ride in San Antonio have received extra media attention.  But what about the safety of the amusement rides at the summer fairs in Missouri?  Department of Public Safety Communications Director Mike O’Connell tells KZIM-KSIM that all Missouri amusement ride operators must have an annual inspection by a licensed approved inspector, and they conduct surprise checks as well!  O’Connell says there were over 800 spot inspections last year, and unsafe rides should be reported to the Division of Fire Safety at 573-751-2930.  O’Connell says if need reassurance, check for the operating permit that is to be placed on or near the ride’s control panel or operator's station.  Looking for a safe and fun ride?  Head over to Jackson Homecomers going on through Saturday—Fountain City Amusements operates the rides, and is required to have those annual inspections!
