Sikeston’s special election is Tuesday, with only one item on the ballot

Aug 01, 2013 -- 5:05pm

The Sikeston City Council is presenting voters Tuesday with the option to keep the 1-cent sales tax for another 10 years.  Council members voted in May to place the continuation of the tax on the ballot for the Aug. 6 election.  Councilman John Gilmore tells KZIM-KSIM that the approximately $2.9 million in revenue generated is used in a variety of areas.  Gilmore says the LCRA goes into abandoned and condemned homes and allows for clean up and redevelopment, to help revitalize some areas of Sikeston—increasing community pride.  The tax is set to expire Sept. 30, 2014.  Scott County Clerk Rita Milam’s office will be open Saturday from 8am-noon for absentee voters who are properly registered residents, as well as Friday and Monday until 5pm.
