Aug 01, 2013 -- 4:00pm

Prosecutors have filed murder charges against a Bonne Terre man in connection to the death of Samuel “Tick” Francis. The St. Francois County Prosecutor’s Office 49-year-old Melvin John Scherrer was charged with first degree murder, armed criminal action, felonious restraint, abandonment of a corpse and tampering with physical evidence in a felony prosecution. According to the probable cause statement, Scherrer allegedly attacked Francis with a baseball bat, taped his hands behind his back and smothered him before hiding his body in a septic tank. Scherrer was identified by witnesses including Francis’ father Gary Francis. Gary Francis’ police report states that Sam told him “if he turned up dead, Sherrer was responsible.” In January, a search was conducted of Sherrer’s residence. Results of the search revealed blood evidence that contained Francis’ DNA. Francis' remains were found in St. Francois County on July 25th. Scherrer is being held without bond.
