Sikeston Transportation Improvements-Intersections, railroad crossings and bridge to be discussed

Aug 05, 2013 -- 9:45am

The Sikeston City Council meets this evening and will take action on four significant transportation projects.

·         Turn lanes at the intersection of Kingshighway at Malone Avenue, the City will partner with MoDOT to provide new turn signals at the intersection.

·         The widening of Highway 61 (South Main) at Larcel Drive to create a turn lane at the entrance to the new Three Rivers Community College Campus. The City will be seeking Federal/State Surface Transportation Project (STP) funds to complete this project.

·         They are discussing with MoDOT and Burlington Northern Railroad to improve five railroad crossings.  MoDOT and the railroad are willing to spend well over $500,000 to install new surface pads, finished approaches, and LED lights. New crossing gates would be installed at the W. North Street and Murray Lane crossings. A pedestrian crossing would also be constructed at Murray Lane.

·         The replacement of the Wakefield bridge crossing Richland Drainage District ditch #4. City Staff is requesting Council enter into a funding agreement to reserve City's remaining STP funds for this project.
