Scott City man accused of killing mother and burning her in her vehicle had first court date today

A Scott City man, who allegedly strangled his mother with a dog leash, then burned her two dogs along with her body to cover up the crime, made his first court appearance today. 25 year old Neil Howland Jr. was arraigned before Judge Scott Horman. His mother's body was found in a burning car off Scott County County Road 323 on August 7th.  Howland is charged with first-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, knowingly burning and abandonment of a corpse. He is being held in the Scott County Jail without bond. An autopsy showed Cynthia Canoy died before the fire.  Howland was questioned on Aug. 10th as a person of interest while he was already in jail on another charge of threatening his mother and his stepfather.  Howland allegedly admitted that he killed his mother during his  police interview.  Sherriff Rick Walter says as they continue to investigate.
