Scott County commissioners discussed during their meeting Thursday the possibility of once again placing use tax on the ballot. Thanks to a bill signed by Gov. Jay Nixon in July that reinstated local vehicle taxes for the time being, many counties that have yet to get voter approval are collecting the use tax on vehicles purchased outside the state. Commissioner Donnie Kiefer tells KZIM-KSIM that they need to decide by next Wednesday, at the latest. Kiefer says they are working to make certain that voters understand that it is not a tax in addition to what they already pay, and that they need residents to understand that buying locally supports local business and their own local government. They make their decision about the option of November’s election on Tuesday, as will the Cape Girardeau County Commissioners.
