(AP) - A 55-year-old man who was in the final months of a prison sentence when he escaped in March will be spending a lot more time behind bars.
The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan says David J. Pederson was sentenced to 60 months in federal prison in Benton on Thursday.
The convicted bank robber escaped while being transferred by bus between federal facilities in Marion, Ill., and Council Bluffs, Iowa. Authorities say he got off the bus in Mount Vernon and obtained an air pistol from a store, using it to carjack two vehicles and take four people hostage.
He pleaded guilty in federal court to the escape and in state court for the car jackings. He must serve his federal sentence after he completes a 20-year sentence in state prison.
