With a relatively dry spring and strong winds in the area the Cape Girardeau Fire Department is warning people against making fires. Cape and the surrounding areas have been placed under an elevated wildfire risk with near red flag atmospheric conditions making open fires dangerous. The city isn’t prohibiting fire pits or cooking fires but they should be used away from homes and trees with a safe way to control embers. Assistant Fire Chief Mark Hasheider tells KZIM-KSIM there are a lot factors to consider when determining fire safety. Approved burn hours are between 9 and 5. You can find out each day what the burn level is by visiting www.cityofCapeGirardeau.org.
