A small gas leak closes a downtown Cape street for two hours

Jun 18, 2012 -- 3:21pm

Main Street was closed for two hours after a gas leak shut down the 300-block and evacuated a building Monday morning in Cape Girardeau.  It happened on the west side of Main at 10:45, after a construction crew from Eastern Missouri Industries cut into an Ameren Missouri 4-inch gas line.  It was next door to Old Hickory Pits.  They took an early lunch hour and evacuated to allow for the air to clear and the line to be repaired. Ameren stopped the leak at 12:45.  Main Street was closed in both directions.  No one was injured.  Cape Fire and Police responded to close the street and offer support.
