Birds Point work on hold pending a protest from an Oklahoma firm

Jun 20, 2012 -- 10:55am

The Memphis District U-S Army Corps of Engineers has received an agency protest by letter dated June 12th, protesting the award of the main contract for repairs to the Birds Point levee reconstruction.  A-and-M Engineering and Environmental Services of Oklahoma, sent the letter which arrived last Friday, protesting the award of the 20-million-dollar contract to three other companies.  A-and-M bid for the project but wasn’t selected in May.  Army Corps spokesman Jim Pogue tells KZIM KSIM they have no choice but to halt work until they review the protest.  Pogue says the Corps will review the claim as expeditiously as possible to minimize the delay in restoring the floodway frontline levee to its authorized level.  Young’s Contracting of Poplar Bluff was given the notice to proceed last Friday.  They were ready to mobilize near Cairo this week.  The goal is to rebuild the levee to 55-feet by September and 62-feet by the end of the year.  There is no timetable on a protest decision from the Corps.
