Downtown Cape gets its first riverboat docking in years

Jul 02, 2012 -- 9:10am

After years of being grounded due to the recession, the old-fashioned paddlewheeler riverboats are back along the Mississippi!  The new American Queen will make a stop in downtown Cape today from noon until 5 PM.  About 400 people are expected to come ashore and spend the day touring the downtown sites and shopping.  Cape convention and visitors bureau spokeswoman Stacy Dohogne-Lane tells KZIM KSIM they’re excited to welcome these tourists back to town.  The American Queen guests are on a 7-day voyage from Memphis to Saint Louis.  They already made stops in New Madrid and Paducah and are on their way to the 4th of July celebration by the Arch Wednesday.  They have paid anywhere from 2-to-6-thouands-dollars for the cruise.  The American Queen will dock again in Cape September 12th and November 13th.  The smaller Queen of the Mississippi boat will be in Cape August 30th and November 5th.
