The Dailey Statesman
Details are now available about the events leading up to three arrests for arson and attempted murder in Bloomfield over the weekend. The case is tied to a rural Bloomfield fire that took place in January 2013. In addition to 33-year old Brandy and 34-year old Christopher Hicks, Stoddard County Sheriff’s Deputies are charging 69-year old Donald Lafferty with attempted murder, armed criminal action, and first-degree arson. Lafferty is also charged with financial exploitation of the elderly $50,000 or more. On April 10th, Prosecutor Russell Oliver asked an investigator to re-open a cold case involving a house fire on Hwy. AB, due to the appearance of financial issues as a motivating factor. A probable cause affidavit says Brandy Hicks admitted to investigators that she and Lafferty were having an affair and he offered she and her husband money to set the house on fire with the amount to increase based on the outcome of the fire. Lafferty's wife, Mildred Lafferty, was sleeping inside the house when the fire was set and awoke to flames.
