A fire at Cape Public Works causes serious damage

Jun 28, 2012 -- 10:08am

Cape Girardeau firefighters were called the Public Works center at 2007 Southern Expressway yesterday at 4pm for smoke coming from the windows of a metal building that houses recyclable materials. Battalion Chief Mark Starnes said via a news release that upon entry to the rear of the building crews were faced with very high heat and heavy smoke. They shut off utilities and used large fans to clear some smoke in order to assess the situation. The fire was contained to a pile or recyclable materials and large cardboard bales. It was also in the cardboard compacting machine. It took 2 hours to put out all hot spots. There was moderate damage from fire and smoke.
