Many of you have prescription drugs in your medicine cabinet you no longer need or have expired. Don’t risk them getting into the wrong hands or those of a small child. Local law enforcement will collect your drugs – no questions asked - at the Drug Take Back Day on the 29th. Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent Larry Gregory tells KZIM KSIM the first year of collections they took in 80 pounds of drugs. The second year they collected 2-hundred-77 pounds! And this year they hope to get even more! This shows just how many drugs are available to our teenagers who generally misuse them! Gregory asks that you NOT flush the pills or throw them out as it is also bad for the environment and water supply. They ship them to an incinerator in East St. Louis for disposal in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency guidelines for this type of material. Twelve departments participated last year in SE Missouri and collected a half ton of drugs – equivalent to one thousand-four-hundred-fifteen pills! The local events will be from 10am til 2pm in the West Park Mall parking lot near Steak and Shake and in Jackson at the Fire and Law enforcement complex. In Jackson they are also conducting a child safety seat program. Visit DEA-dot-gov for a location near you. Or call 800-882-9539.
