A Poplar Bluff man dies after an apparent bath salt incident

Jul 06, 2012 -- 11:30am

A Poplar Bluff man is dead after what police believe was a consequence of Bath Salts.  Poplar Bluff authorities responded Thursday to a Casey’s General Store on South Broadway Street in reference to a white male creating a disturbance.  They found 40-year-old Charles Riels disrobed, and delusional.  He was arrested the day before and hospitalized due to erratic behavior.  Riels was taken to the hospital again.  While transporting him, he began kicking the officers.  Riels was subdued but then collapsed and was pronounced dead at a local hospital.  Police Chief Danny Whiteley tells KZIM KSIM they believe this was a clear overdose of Bath Salts.  Whiteley says an autopsy is scheduled for this weekend and the Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.  He says use of these synthetic drugs like K-2 and bath salts is a growing problem and this is an example of how it can affect your judgment and health!
