A fire at an apartment building at 417 MarroseAnn Drive in Cape Girardeau at 5:13 this morning caused moderate damage. Cape Fire Battalion Chief Mark Starnes said via a news release that crews arrived at the scene to find moderate smoke coming from a third floor window, on the front of the building. The fire was quickly controlled to the kitchen area. Two occupants of the apartment were alerted by smoke detectors and exited the building without harm. Firefighters aggressively went door to door evacuating the rest of the occupants. The blaze was under control in about 10 minutes. Though the cause is still under investigation it does appear to have originated near the stove. No foul play is suspected.
