Cape hospitals quell concerns of the meningitis outbreak reaching the area

Oct 08, 2012 -- 4:31pm

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say there are now more than 90 confirmed cases of the rare form of fungal meningitis.  The recent outbreak spans nine states and has killed at least seven people.  So far no cases have been reported in Missouri.  Cape Girardeau hospitals have voiced concerns for the issue but assure there is no need to worry.  Southeast Health Pharmacy Director Dr. Nicole Allcock tells KZIM-KSIM they have done their due diligence. The New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts has been linked to the outbreak and has shut down operations of their spinal steroid shot that has led to the disease along with making a recall on the product.  Neither Southeast Health nor Saint Francis Medical Center orders medicine through this group.
