Southern Illinois University’s Aviation program is flying in 124 prospective students into Carbondale this weekend for their 8th annual Career Day. The high school juniors and seniors will leave Chicago aboard an American Airlines MD-80 jet and arrive at about 8:50 Saturday morning. The students will tour the Southern Illinois Airport and university aviation facilities, the SIU campus, and visit the new transportation education center. Aviation Management department chair David NewMyer tells KZIM KSIM they expect to get about 25 of these students to enroll at SIU to fill a nationwide need for more pilots and aviation jobs. NewMyer says this is also homecoming weekend so the students will see the SIU campus in full force, buzzing with activity. They had 210 applications for the 124 slots for this year’s career day. The university holds to other similar events in the spring and summer as a recruiting tool.
