Cape Girardeau city and county working to bring a new sports store to the area

Oct 15, 2012 -- 2:23pm

A new sporting goods store could be making a home in Cape Girardeau.  Monday morning the Cape County Commission met and discussed a portion of tax revenue being dedicated to Cape for infrastructure improvements.  This was in relation to Academy Sports plus outdoors opening between Sam’s and Kohl’s on Shirley Drive.  The 1 point 8 Million dollar project has already begun and the deal could allow the developer to be reimbursed for public improvements including parking lots, lighting and utility work.  Cape City Manager Scott Meyer tells KZIM-KSIM there are protections in place. This is similar to the deal made with Menard’s and Kohl’s.  The proposed Academy agreement allows the city and county to keep all tax revenue on the 2 point 5 million dollars in sales.  Only after meeting that threshold will the city is required to pay the developer.
