In 2011 there were more than 69 domestic violence cases in Missouri.  In Cape County officers responded to more than 17-hundred calls.  The Safe House for Women received 6-hundred-56 calls looking for help.  Monday the Cape County Sheriff Department and County Commissioners signed a proclamation declaring October Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Sheriff Department Detective Jamie Malugen (Ma-loo-jin) tells KZIM-KSIM awareness is key to fighting this growing problem. Malugen adds officers are always in danger when handling a domestic assault case and have resulted in a high number of deaths.  Domestic assault affects men, women and children of all ages.  If you know someone who is suffering from violence you are urged to contact you local authorities.  You can also contact the Safe House for Women at 651-1614.
